111Jack B. Beets • April 30th 1955


Officer Jack B. Beets was killed in Jack's Place, 3003 1/2 Nance, while checking the tavern's license with his partner, Auxiliary Captain Gougenheim. He was leaning behind the bar to read a beer license when Manual Ben Smith entered with a pistol in his hand. Beets did not see his assailant. When Officer Beets turned around, he was shot in the face and heart. He died an hour later at Jeff Davis Hospital. The suspect was later killed by Captain Gougenheim, who was also killed during the incident.
