Officer Charles R. Coates, II., was directing traffic around an accident scene on Memorial Drive, at 8:35 pm, on May 2, 1982. He was struck by an oncoming vehicle which was attempting to avoid the backed-up lanes of traffic. Life Flight was called and transported Officer Coates to Hermann Hospital. Officer Coates died approximately nine months later (February 23, 1983) as a result of the head and internal injuries he sustained in the accident. The motorist was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Motor Vehicle and received a sentence of 10 yrs. probation and a $1,000 fine.
