Officers Tim L. Hearn and M.K. Jordan, assigned to the Narcotics Division, were making a buy/bust in the 6800 block of Harrisburg. The suspect, Rudy Esquiel, started shooting, hitting both officers. Officer Hearn passed away after attempts were made to save his life in surgery. The suspect was sentenced to death and executed in 1986.
