Officer James F. Kilty, assigned to the Narcotics Division, was working undercover. He and two other Officers were serving an arrest and search warrant on Willie Howard Jr., a cook. The incident occurred at the Ramada Inn off the Southwest Freeway. The suspect fired several rounds at the officers, one of them hitting Officer Kilty. Officer Kilty died of his wounds at Ben Taub Hospital and the suspect died at the scene.
