Baytown
Police Officer Bobby T. Paulk, 31, was killed while on routine patrol
when a drunk driver, traveling at a high rate of speed collided
head-on with his patrol car on September 9, 1977 in Baytown. Officer
Paulk, who had only been a Baytown police officer for ten months,
was scheduled to rotate off of his patrol duties the very next day
and begin a four month shift at the police jail. The suspect, according
to witnesses, was reported traveling at a high rate of speed and
weaving in traffic when his vehicle is reported to have crossed
three lanes of traffic before hitting Officer Paulks patrol
car. Officer Paulk was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect,
in the other car, was out of jail on bond for possession of a controlled
substance. Officer Paulk left behind a widow, Martha, and two children
Christine and Christopher. Officer Paulk was the first Baytown Police
Officer killed in the line of duty.
