Officer Herbert N. Planer was working an extra job at LaFonda West Apartments when he was gunned down by Donald Ray Speck. Speck, an ex-convict, had been trying to steal a car when he was surprised by Officer Planer during the early morning hours. Speck later surrendered to the police.
