Officer John Anthony Salvaggio had stopped a speeding motorist on the Katy Freeway. He was standing near the rear of the driver’s door when a vehicle driven by William Byrd struck him. Officer Salvaggio was pronounced dead at the scene. After turning himself in several days later, it was determined that Byrd continued on his way home after the fatal incident. Byrd was convicted of Failure to Stop and Render Aid and received a five year sentence. Byrd had several prior D.W.I. (Driving While Intoxicated) Convictions.
