Sgt. Bruno Soboleski
was riding patrol in the 6600 block of Calhoun on April 7, 1991.
A female grand juror was accompanying Sgt. Soboleski as a ride-along
observer. Sgt. Soboleski noticed two males standing in the intersection
of Calhoun and Hull Streets and initiated an investigation. Sgt.
Soboleski completed a pat down of one suspect, but as he began patting
down the second suspect, Shelton Jones, drew a weapon and shot Sgt.
Soboleski in the chest three times. Before fleeing the scene, Jones
also fired at the grand juror who was still in the patrol vehicle.
In addition, a third suspect fired at Sgt. Soboleski as he lay on
the ground, mortally wounded. Sgt. Soboleski was transported to
Hermann Hospital where he remained for five days until he succumbed
to his injuries. The suspects were apprehended shortly after the
incident. Shelton Jones was convicted of Capital Murder and received
a sentence of death by lethal injection.
