Officer Cuong "Tony" Huy Trinh was off-duty and operating his family’s convenience store located at 2700 Westerland. One of three suspects, Choung Duong Tong, entered the store and pointed a firearm at Trinh demanding his jewelry. The armed suspect then demanded Trinh’s wallet. After learning he was a police officer, suspect Tong shot Officer Trinh once in the head. Officer Trinh died at the scene. All three suspects were later apprehended. Suspect Tong was convicted of Capital Murder and was sentenced to death by lethal injection.
