Detective Victor R. Wells, III., was in plainclothes and driving an unmarked police car in the 6800 block of Harrisburg. He had stopped to talk to a cab driver involved in a disturbance. Even though his police badge and radio were visible to the cab driver, the cab driver shot Detective Wells in the chest. He was taken to Ben Taub Hospital where he died of his wounds.
